Myths and Facts about Bras

Think back to when you were little… there were so many childhood myths that circulated around, “If you swallow gum it stays in your stomach for 7 years”, “if you cross your eyes, they will stay that way”. As we grew up we realized these childhood myths were not so true. But then… bras came along… they are an everyday wear and must, but why are there so many myths circulating around them? We have all heard the stories from our mothers, grandmothers, and friends and sometimes we choose to believe them and sometimes we don’t. Bras have become some sort of folklore amongst women…what is actually true and what isn't? These myths make women go crazy and we have all fallen for this ‘booby trap’ for too long! Ladies, it’s finally time to crack them!

Sleeping in a bra makes your breasts perkier…

I know I have been hearing this ever since I started to wear bras. All of my friends would tell me that this was true… well I’m sorry to tell you ladies, this is proven to be a myth. My friends and I were not the only ones to believe this theory, women all over did and many probably still do. The ugly truth about this myth is it is natural for breasts to start to weigh down with age. The leading causes of this happening are pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, gaining weight, weight loss, and most importantly GRAVITY! Your breasts not staying as perky is a natural occurrence and unfortunately it is inevitable.

Wearing a bra will make your breasts sag…

This has been a constant theory, and as the years went on many fashion trends said “NO” to wearing bras. In the past, many women were seen not wearing bras with their shirts and that became a ‘fashion statement’. What many women didn't know that the whole story behind this ‘fashion statement’ was, women did not want their breasts to sag due to over wearing bras. Finally someone came out and said something… this is a myth! It was believed that you were not allowing your breasts to support themselves by wearing a bra, and when you did take it off it would lead to sagging. This is not true and like I said earlier, breasts sagging is natural and is due to many other factors.

Ways to prevent your breasts from sagging, and appear to be perkier…

Buying the right bra for your body with maximum support will slow down the effects of sagging. There are bras that have built in push up and padding with in the cups which is meant to increase cleavage and to make your breast seem perkier. If you want your breasts to become perkier naturally, there is always the old fashion way… working out! There are a number of workouts that make your breasts perkier such as, the Medicine Ball Pushup, The Elbow Squeeze Shoulder Press, and Stability Ball Chest Press. All of these workouts work the upper body and pec muscles. The pec muscles are under your breasts and the more you work that out the stronger the muscle will be, which will make your breasts more perky.

Wearing an underwire bra may cause Breast Cancer…

This theory about bras came about years ago… it became a phenomenon and really freaked a lot of women out, I know I was! At first, researchers believed that the underwire in a bra restricted the lymph nodes due to it being so tight around the breasts. This was believed to have caused toxins to be released that may have caused cancer. Recent studies have shown, that this in fact is a myth and is not true! There are many other internal factors due to a women’s genealogy that may cause Breast Cancer. So ladies don’t be nervous… wearing underwire bras will not affect this! Although, for certain women the underwire in the bra may be uncomfortable and can cause skin irritation. If you are not comfortable wearing an underwire bra there are many bras out there that do not have underwire built in them and they are accessible at any landray store!

Wearing a strapless bra just doesn’t work…

This may be a fact for certain women but it is only because you have not purchased the right strapless bra! A strapless bra will ALWAYS stay up if you have a silicone strip or band built into the underwire or cups of the bra. This prevents the bra from falling down because the silicone sticks to your skin and the bra is able to stay in place. However, you can purchase silicone clear straps and attach them to the bra so you could have maximum support. The straps are clear so no one will realize you are even wearing them! Ladies remember, remember if you are wearing a strapless bra with silicone bands or straps, I recommend you not using any cream or lotion because that will enable the bra to slip and fall down!

It is okay to wash bras in the washing machine…

It is in fact okay to wash bras in the washing machine, however, the only issue with using a washing machine is you have the risk of damaging and crushing the cups of the bras, stretching out straps, and even tangling hooks in lace. I know, none of that sounds positive… If you do wash your bras in the washing machine the machine should be set to gentle machine wash so you do not run the risk of damaging your bras. Although, if you want your bras to last longer and keep their form, I recommend handwashing so you are able to be more delicate with them.

You do not need a sports bra to workout…

Wearing a sports bra while working out allows your breasts to have the maximum support that they need. You are able to wear a regular bra, but it will not be as comfortable… for all of my top heavy ladies… I know we have tried this one before and all it leads to is your breasts popping out and not even being supported. If you wear a sports bra it minimizes breast movement which prevents less sagging in the long run. With that being said… let's find those sports bras ladies!

A great bra can last a lifetime…

We all know that we wish this could be true. I know ladies, we all have that favorite bra that we just can't get rid of! Recent findings have shown, that a bra is not able to last more than year… I know how crazy is that! The reason why is because the bra may stretch out and lose its form which means it will not be able to support as well as it used to. The best way to prevent this is to take care of your bras and always clean them and wear them in the proper way. If you neglect your bra it will have the possibility of not lasting as long as you hoped.

Ladies be nice and treat your bras well… after all bras are a girl’s best friend! Keep them intact and take care of them and they will last a lifetime!
